Braintree Chooses New Waste Company

Sunrise Scavenger replaces Capitol Waste.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan announced Thursday that Braintree has signed a five-year contract with Sunrise Scavenger for residential waste and recycling collection.

The agreement comes three months after Quincy chose to back-out of a three-town agreement on waste and replaces current service provider Capitol Waste. Sunrise will begin work for Braintree starting July 1, 2013.

Sullivan said the contract will bring Braintree savings above and beyond those seen previously with Capitol Waste. The town will save $150,000 in the first year and $750,000 over the five years length of the contract.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that this transition for residential trash and recycling be seamless,” Sullivan said in a statement. “We have emphasized with Sunrise Scavenger that customer service will be the true measure of their success.”

Residents will continue to be able to place bulky items and white goods at curbside and yard waste will be collected at least seven weekends during the year. Each household will receive new trash and recycling receptacles in September.

A program for expanded recycling will be implemented in the fall, according to the mayor’s office. Sunrise Scavenger was selected through a bidding procedure conducted by both towns that requires the choice to be the lowest qualified option.

Correction: Sunrise will work for Braintree only, not Weymouth.
