Woman Tells Police She Fended Off Attacker Walking Home From South Shore Plaza

The following information was supplied by the Braintree Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

An 18-year-old woman from Braintree said she was attacked during an attempted robbery in front of Flahery Elementary School on Sunday but fought back and the suspect fled.

The woman told police that while walking home from the South Shore Plaza on Sept. 2 a man either jumped out from behind a dumpster or approached her at the flag pole, Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

"The woman reported that the suspect, described as a white male, 20 to 30 years old, 5’3” tall, medium build, short white or blond hair and clean shaven grabbed her from behind in a bear hug with both arms wrapped around her and demanded her bag," Jenkins said.

At that point, she fell and also noticed a knife, which she picked up off the ground. The woman then kicked the suspect and fled. She was not injured. Police could not locate the suspect with the help of a canine, Jenkins said. He was last seen fleeing down Lakeside Drive toward the Plaza.
