A 54-year-old Johnston, RI man was scammed out of $3,250 when he arranged to buy flat screen televisions from a man who was committing a common fraud at Sears at the South Shore Plaza.

The man's son arranged a deal to purchase five 65” Sony LED 3D televisions for $3,250, Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

The victim met the seller – identified only as "Obie" – at the Plaza on Wednesday, Oct. 2. "Obie" gave him a receipt for the televisions, went into Sears and never returned.

The Johnston man, after waiting an hour, went inside and discovered that the receipt was a fraud, Jenkins said.
