A 24-year-old Hanson man charged with attempted murder and other violent crimes last week tried to keep a woman against her will at an apartment in Braintree and assaulted her with a knife and other weapons.

Michael Harlan was also charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, kidnapping and intimidation of a witness after the incident late Tuesday night, Nov. 27, Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

The woman, a 23-year-old Weymouth resident, told police that she fled the Holbrook Avenue apartment where Harlan was staying after he tried to make her stay and assaulted her.

Harlan is being held without bail while he awaits a dangerousness hearing Thursday at Quincy District Court, the Patriot Ledger reported. After drinking heavily with Harlan at Daver & Buster's, the woman went back to the apartment, where he threatened her with an axe, choked and cut her, according to the Ledger.

Jenkins said that on arrival, Harlan gave officers false information, causing them to initiate a search for the woman.

"The woman was ultimately able to flee the apartment, meet up with a friend and drive home to Weymouth," Jenkins said.

She then called the police from her home and Weymouth and Braintree police and medical personnel responded there. Detectives confiscated the weapons in question that were found while serving a warrant at the Braintree apartment.

Jenkins said the woman told police she was "acquainted" with Harlan but did not have a dating relationship.
