Police Chief Warns Braintree Residents About BELD Phone Scams

Recently, residential customers of the Braintree Electric Light Department, along with at least one business, were contacted by people masquerading as BELD employees and threatening to cut off service for non-payment.

Police Chief Russell Jenkins urged residents to be wary of these types of calls and to contact BELD at 781-348-2353 if it happens.

“This is one of many phone scams we have been experiencing in the area over the past several months,” Jenkins said in a statement.  “The usual get rich quick scam has been joined by scams claiming that a grandchild has been involved in an accident or a family member has been taken hostage. In all cases, they ask for money.

“Get rich quick schemes are just that. Schemes. Don’t wire money to strangers and don’t give your credit card number or personal information to anyone over the telephone that you don’t know. Call the police and contact your family members to confirm that everyone is safe.”
