Braintree police are seeking charges against a 42-year-old Dorchester man after he allegedly slammed his car into a tree on Wood Road while under the influence of alcohol.

The man, who was not named because the charges were not official yet, was seen by a police officer veering off the road and striking a large tree, Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

The accident happened at about 1 a.m. and "the impact caused extensive damage to the vehicle, deployed the airbag and left the vehicle smoking," Jenkins said. Officer Peter Gillis and Officer Brian Eng removed the man from his Chrysler Sebring.
