Police say a Staten Road homeowner may have come upon someone who had broken into her home last Wednesday and stole several pieces of jewelry before fleeing.
The break-in happened sometime between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 and when she came home, the homeowner heard banging noises inside, Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.
Once inside, the owner said she found the kitchen door leading to the basement had been kicked in. Jenkins said the thief likely got into the house through a rear basement door.
"The homeowner fled the home and called police who searched the house, but were unable to locate anyone inside," he said.
