Braintree Fire Responds to Water Damage at Hyatt, Sinking Boat

A faulty sprinkler caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage to the Hyatt Place Saturday.

Braintree firefighters responded to a failed sprinkler system Saturday at the Hyatt Place that caused extensive water damage and also to the sinking of a boat outside of the Braintree Yacht Club.

There were no injuries in either incident, according to a release from the Braintree Fire Department.

Firefighters went to the Hyatt after an alarm went off there just before 10 a.m. Saturday. A sprinkler had been activated on the sixth floor, though not as a result of a fire.

"Fire crews shut sprinkler system down, and conducted a room to room search for additional hazards," according to the department. "Electrical systems in 11 rooms were shut off as well as most of the hallway electrical circuits throughout
the entire hotel.

"The initial activation was determined to be a failed sprinkler head in room 615, cause of failure is still being determined. Despite the efforts of fire crews, damage is estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars."

Across town at the Braintree Yacht Club on Gordon Road, firefighters found a 32-foot Trojan pleasure boat under water shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday.

"Crews immediately checked for any victims, found none and determined the vessel may have sunk during the night with no persons on board," according to the department. "The Boat is registered to a person from Kingston MA, there is no threat to health, safety or the environment at this time.

As a precaution, fire officials placed "booms" designed absorb fluids around the vessel while it was being removed.
