Berkley Man Falls Victim to Popular TV Scam, Pulled at South Shore Plaza

All of the charges contained in this news release are merely accusations and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

A 49-year-old Berkley man fell victim to a popular TV scam on Wednesday evening, July 15, when he gave $3,200 to a stranger in the South Shore Plaza  parking lot in Braintree to purchase what he thought was a 65” Samsung LED 3D Curved TV.

After watching the stranger walk off with his money and waiting for one hour for the man to return with his television, the man reported the scam to police.

The victim told officers that his employer learned from a man claiming to be “Jimmy,” his UPS delivery man that his brother, “Henry,” who allegedly worked in the shipping department at Sears at the South Shore Plaza had a surplus of TVs that we was looking to sell at a discounted price.

The victim contacted Henry and agreed to meet him outside the Sears automotive center. An associate of Henry’s named “John” then met the victim in the parking lot. The victim gave "John" $3,200 and "John" gave the victim a receipt identifying the TV to be purchased. The victim was then instructed to meet John at the loading dock to pick up his television.

"John" never returned and the victim contacted police.
