Dozens of local residents and officials crowded around the Charlotte Rose Kelly Play Area at French's Common Wednesday evening, marking the opening of the playground built in Charlotte's memory on what would have been her seventh birthday.

Charlotte, the inspiration behind the annual Prayers for Charlotte road races in Braintree that raise money for neuroblastoma research and relief for families fighting cancer, lost her two-and-a-half-year battle with Neuroblastoma on Dec. 7, 2011.
