8 Rules for Using Space Heaters Without Burning Your House Down

Follow the Massachusetts Fire Service's common-sense steps to stay warm—and safe—this winter.

By Roberto Scalese

Brr! The week brought the area's first snow (albeit very, very little snow) and a plunge in temperatures. With thermostats kicking on and blankets dusted off, many folks are also turning to space heaters to stay warm.

Those heaters, while convenient, can also be dangerous. According to the commonwealth's Department of Fire Services, there were 69 space heater fires in the state between 2008-20012. And these aren't small fires: One in 20 resulted in death, and the average space heater fire causes $50,000 in damage.

According to Fire Services, "Twenty-six percent of these fires were caused when combustible materials such as bedding, magazines, newspapers, clothing or furniture were too close to the heater, and another 3% were caused when rugs, carpets or mats were under or too close to the heater."

How can you stay safe? Fire Services released the following list of rules to follow when using a space heater:

  1. When buying a heater, look for one that has been tested and labeled by a nationally recognized testing company, such as Underwriter’s Laboratories Inc. (UL).

  2. Keep the heater 3 feet away from drapes, furniture or other flammable materials.

  3. Place the heater on a level surface away from areas where someone might bump into it and knock it over.

  4. Avoid using extension cords. If you must use an extension cord, make sure it is a heavy duty cord marked with a power rating at least as high as that on the label of the heater itself.

  5. Space heaters are for temporary use only. Never leave a space heater unattended or running while you sleep.

  6. Supervise children and pets when a space heater is in use.

  7. Keep electric heaters away from water. Never use them near a sink or in the bathroom.

  8. The sale and use of unvented kerosene heaters is illegal in Massachusetts.
