Gardener's Guild Celebrates the Holidays with House Tour
The Gardeners' Guild of Braintree is a service-oriented organization that gives back to the community through efforts like annual scholarships and its annual book donation.
This year the Gardener’s Guild of Braintree’s “Holiday House Tour” featured three
historic homes, The Asa French House, Sylvanus Thayer House and Gilbert Bean
Museum.
The Braintree Historical Society allowed us to showcase these historic
homes and over 400 people enjoyed the beautifully decorated houses on Sunday, December 8th.
Residents of the ASA French House, Bob Harris and Aziz Karsan, cordially greeted
the many visitors and presented to them a copy of “The French Connection to
Braintree,” a historical accounting (which they had researched) of the French
Family, Town of Braintree, and history of the properties visited by everyone.
The first post office was located in the ASA French House. Visitors viewed each
room of the house decorated to the appropriate period by the Guild member.
They also enjoyed some beautiful collections of Christmas items that both Bob and Aziz have collected over the years. The Thayer House & Bean Museum had minimal period decorations but are always interesting historic homes to tour.
Across the Street at Town Hall the Cahill Auditorium was filled with many
shoppers purchasing beautiful fresh green centerpieces, wreaths and bows made by the Guild Members. Over 40 local vendors were selling unusual hand-made items and gifts which added to the holiday event.
While shopping, everyone enjoyed free refreshments while listening to the BHS String Orchestra and Archbishop Williams High School Chorus. What a wonderful way to do your holiday shopping.
The House Tour & Boutique is the Guild’s largest fundraiser of the year. All funds
benefit the Town of Braintree and are allocated to a number of programs.
Included are plantings and maintenance at Town Hall Mall, Furlong Park, Police Station, Schools, Senior Center, Crispin Center, Thayer House herb garden, Thayer Library indoor plant maintenance, memorial tree plantings, hospice plants, administrating the adopt-an-island town beautification program, donating environmental books each year to all Braintree public schools, Pond Meadow Park’s summer program for children and the BHS scholarship program.
