Braintree Teachers Win 'Great Grown Up' Spelling Bee

The event, put on annually by the Rotary Club of Braintree and South Shore Plaza, raises thousands for educational programs.

Members of the School Committee offered unrestrained asseveration of merit for the Braintree Public Schools spelling bee team for its victory Saturday in an annual charity event put on by the Braintree Rotary Club and South Shore Plaza.

Asseveration – to affirm or declare positively or earnestly – was the final word spelled correctly by English Department Director Rebecca Fredericks and English teachers Emily Rodd, Courtney Wheeler and Robert Marx in the “Great Grown-up Spelling Bee” this past weekend.

"It was really fun," Fredericks told the committee Monday night.

Sixteen teams of four members each competed for the title. All proceeds from the fundraiser benefit local educational and literacy programs, such as scholarships to high school seniors, youth sports, music and art programs, senior citizen events, and other charitable causes.

Committee Chair Shannon Hume, a Rotary member, said every year the Braintree squad has made the final round, and was proud to see the team make its way through a long list of challenging words to win this year.

"There's no softballs," Hume said.
