Summer Safety Unit at The Hollis Pool
At the Hollis School, Children in the 2nd grades are participating in a Summer Safety Unit.
The “pool” was defined with blue painters tape on the gym floor.
The whistle blew and the lifeguard directed the Children to sit along the shallow end of the pool.

“Ok Everyone, Welcome to the Hollis Pool. Who wants to swim today”
The Children treaded water, did the crawl stroke the length of the shallow end, and floated on their backs. Through inactive dialogue the Children were able to identify the importance of the test itself. After lifeguard demonstrations and dialogue, the Children retested and their skills immediately improved.

They learned the rules at the pools and beaches and through thought provoking pictures and questions, the Students were better able to understand the need for safety around and in the water.
The lifeguard then showed them "The Beach Bag".
Students guessed the contents of what lifeguards and smart Swimmers typically carry to the beach or pool:
Phone, first Aid Kit, Water, food, sunblock, towel, swim shirt, sunglasses. The Children took turns answered questions.
As the items came out of the bag, pics were posted onto the whiteboard.
The conversation then flowed. “Who can tell me what the most important item in my bag is? Answer:Phone. Why?
They then learned how to call 911.
911

What help is being given
When did it happen
Don't hang up until help arrives
Pics of safety equipment were scattered on the walls. The conversation shifted into a discussion about the rescue equipment.
We wrapped it up with a big round of applause.
The Children were fantastic. They all did a great job learning about the importance of safety.
New results from the Center of Disease Control established that there are 10 drownings a day around the globe.
10 drownings a day globally!
Pls take the time over the next few weeks to have active conversations with your Children about Water safety. Remember, you will always be their first lifeguard.
