Braintree's unemployment rate was down slightly in August from July and has dropped considerably from the 2011 average over the past eight months.
There were just more than 1,000 people unemployed in Braintree in August, and 18,200 peole employed. That gave the town a a seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate of 5.4 percent last month, down from 5.8 percent in July, according to municipal data released on Tuesday by the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The largest job gains in local markets happened last month in the Worcester and Brockton-Bridgewater-Easton areas.
Statewide, the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate in August was down 0.2 percent to 6.4 percent, though unemployment rose slightly when adjusted.
In 2011, Braintree averaged 6.6 percent unemployment, down from a recent peak of 7.8 percent in 2010.

According to the state, September 2012 unemployment rate, labor force data, and jobs estimates for Massachusetts will be released on Oct. 18, 2012 and local unemployment statistics will be released on Oct. 23, 2012.
