A 12-inch water main broke at the intersection of Pond Street and Wayne Avenue in Braintree early Sunday morning, creating a large sinkhole and causing the shut-off of water to homes on several streets.
A work crew is at the site now, Deputy Fire Chief Dan McDonnell said, and it is still hard to tell when water will be turned back on in the area.
“They’re working as hard as they can on it," McDonnell said. "It’s in a tough spot.”
The pipe broke at about 4:30 a.m. due to a currently unknown cause. Its collapse caused a sinkhole about 10 feet in diameter to form in the road over that portion of the water main, McDonnell said.
