IT Team Working on Braintree Website, Phone Outage

The town's IT systems started having problems in the morning on Wednesday.

Sometime late Wednesday morning a fiber optic line near the Dorchester/Quincy border was damaged, resulting in Internet and phone problems for the Town of Braintree.

IT support is currently working on the issue, which has affected the town's website (www.braintreema.gov) as well as BELD's (www.beld.com) and some of its phone communications. Internet for BELD customers has also been affected.

Mayoral Aide Christopher Griffin said on Wednesday afternoon that the tech team is working as hard as it can to get the Internet and phones back up and running. He could not provide a definite timeline. Any emails sent to town addresses will reach their destination once the system returns online, Griffin added.

Any updates on when this will be up? Phone and internet are out at my house and calling BELD just gets a recording saying it's down and they're working on it.

Nothing new yet. I'm having a tough time getting in touch as well because of the outage. I will update asap.

I hope internet is restored soon so that my daughter can do her school homework assignments. She needs to access workbooks etc on her school issued iPad. Not sure how the school will react to her homework not being complete because there was no internet.

Both phone and Internet service was restored overnight. Thank you, everyone, for your patience!

I was thinking same with son's homework as well. Worked out that he only had homework from physical textbooks. Bigger issue was a lost day of productivity as I work form home and was crippled without internet access. Curious as toi whether BELD will provide some level of credit for inconvenience and impact to work and school.

JoAnn, although the fiber line damage was not a BELD issue, I am surprised you didn't have contingency plans in place for such events. That was a long, disruptive outage. Hopefully BELD is better prepared for future events. RE: Homework worries...there are plenty of places like Panera bread, Starbucks, and libraries, that provide wifi access. Certainly not convenient, but available in a pinch. Not so easy when working from home as Anonymous says above. And of course any business that uses BELD for their website hosting lost at least a day's business and might have lost customers forever.
