Today in 1859 Oregon was admitted as the 33rd U.S. state. Arizona also becomes part of America, as the 48th state, in 1912. On Feb. 14, 1989, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the Supreme Leader of Iran, issued a call for the death of author Salman Rushdie. Abolitionist Frederick Douglass was born on this day in 1818, along with Jimmy Hoffa in 1913.
