Web-Based Driver-for-Hire Service Expands to Braintree

Uber, a mobile app that connects people with a driver and can track the vehicle's progress, has expanded its service area to Quincy and Braintree.

The San Francisco-based startup was founded in 2009 moves into the South Shore after making footholds in cities around the world, including Boston, New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris and Berlin.

Users of the app can request a ride with the tap of a button, asking for a luxury car or SUV, or lower-cost hybrid to pick them up. Payment is done by way of a credit card on file and there is no need for tipping.

Uber is offering a promotion to those in Quincy and Braintree through July 21. Enter the promo code ‘bossouth’ in the app and the company will cover up to $25 of the fare.

Uber's service has faced controversy in several cities, including Boston, after critics claimed it was an illegal taxicab operation.

In 2012, Massachusetts officials reversed an order that originally prohibited the company from operating in the state because of how it tracks fares through GPS, according to the Boston Globe.
