Before Sake opened its doors, if you were in the mood for sushi, you had to go to towns like Quincy, Norwell, or Hingham to find it. No more. Sake, located at 910 Washington St. in South Braintree Square, can cure your cravings for sushi and more.
I popped in on a recent afternoon and was met by owner Wendy Zheng, a Braintree resident. According to Zheng, Sake is enjoying a brisk dinner crowd. The Sushi bar is also a busy spot and offers a front row seat to watch the Sushi chef at work. Spicy Tuna has been the big seller and other customer favorites include Oyster Katsu, Tempura, and Udon noodles, which can either be served in a soup or sautéed with seafood, chicken, beef, or vegetables.
Zheng also gave me a quick primer on reading the menu. Sushi refers to the raw, sliced fish served on white rice (brown rice is also available). Sashimi refers to raw fish served as is – that is, without rice. Maki refers to the rice and seaweed rolls which may or may not contain raw fish and also include a vegetable, such as California Rolls. I tried the Rainbow Maki roll and it was as delicious as it was delightful to look at. I also tried the tuna and salmon sushi as well as salmon sashimi. All were wonderfully fresh and tasty.

For those in your party who may be sushi shy, as I was when first introduced, there are plenty of other choices. Tempura, which usually consists of vegetables, chicken, or shrimp dipped in a batter and then deep fried is also popular. Don’t let the deep-fried description dissuade you. The batter is wonderfully light and the oil is barely there. Teriyaki offerings include Chicken, Beef, Salmon, Shrimp or Tofu served on a bed of noodles. If you can’t decide on just one, go with the Half & Half combination plate. All entrees are served with a bowl of Miso soup and house salad.
Like the dinner menu, lunch specials also include Miso soup and a house salad. Prices start at $9.50. Choices include items from the sushi bar, sashimi, and maki, and the Bento Box comes with your choice of teriyaki or tempura, or combined with items from the sushi bar.

For now, you’ll have to get your sake elsewhere as Sake the restaurant was unable to secure a beer and wine license, which are currently unavailable from the town. You can also place your order online for pickup or delivery ($2 charge).
Now until June 30, Sake is offering a 15 percent discount on all take out and 10 percent off in-restaurant dining. Open Tuesday through Sunday, Sake is closed on Monday.
