Education Secretary Shares First Day of School with Ross Elementary

Ross was also the focus of a recent New York Times story on math and science education.

Secretary of Education Matthew Malone, the former Brockton Public Schools Superintendent, visited Ross Elementary School Wednesday on the first day for grades 1-9 in Braintree.

Malone toured the school with Principal Donna Bonarrigo, Mayor Joseph Sullivan, Superintendent Dr. Maureen Murray, School Business Manager Peter Kress, Town Councilor Tom Bowes and Rep. Mark Cusack.

They talked special education, recovery high schools, English as a second language learners – like Brockton, Braintree has seen more foreign language students – space issues and free and reduced lunch. Ross, along with Morrison, is a federally-designated Title 1 school.

Malone's visit comes on the heels of a New York Times math and science education article focusing extensively on Braintree schools and Ross Elementary. Dr. Murray said Malone was taking a swing through the South Shore Wednesday and she suggested he stop by Ross after Quincy.

CBS has also been in contact with the school department about a possible special at Ross featuring the school's outdoor classroom.
