Braintree High Theatre Guild Performing Arabian Night Musical

Kismet will be shown Nov. 7, 8 and 9 at Braintree High School.

The Braintree High School Theatre Guild presents Kismet, directed by Rolf I. Carlson.

Kismet, a musical Arabian night, will provide the audience with an enchanting tale of a struggling poet who talks his way out of trouble several times, and of his beautiful daughter, Marsinah, who falls in love with the young caliph.

After assuming the identity of a beggar named Hajj, the poet bamboozles a notorious brigand, Jawan, into giving him one hundred pieces of gold in return for removing a curse set by the real Hajj. After sharing his newly found riches
with his daughter, the poet is taken to the Wazir’s palace where he is put on trial for theft.

Meanwhile, Marsinah, with a purse full of gold, is showered with beautiful wares in the market place. As she admires the garden in her new jewelry, she is spotted by the Caliph, who falls in love with her immediately. The story unfolds as both the poet and Marsinah are faced with ever challenging dilemmas.

Filled with exotic lovers, lively lyrics, colorful costumes, and dazzling dances, Kismet will transport the audience to a glamorous, impelling world. Kismet is a whirlwind of excitement with music and lyrics by Robert Wright and George Forrest based on the themes by Alexander Borodin, and adapted from the book by Charles Lederer and Luther Davis.

Kismet, first produced on Broadway in 1953, won the Tony award for Best Musical a year later, in 1954.

Set in medieval Baghdad, this timeless rags-to-riches tale features hit songs such as “Stranger in Paradise” as Marsinah meets the caliph in the garden and “Baubles, Bangles, and Beads” as she wonders at the magnificent, sparkling jewelry in the market place.

Kismet will be performed at Braintree High School in the Grabosky Auditorium on Nov. 7 at 7 p.m., Nov. 8 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 9 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets will be sold online at www.seatyourself.biz/bhs and at the door. Ticket prices are as follows: $15 for evening performances, $12 for matinee performance. For more information please contact Lauren Squires at lsquires@braintreema.gov.
