Carmela Varraso of Braintree was recognized at regional event.

The Rotary Club of Braintree has recognized a local Braintree resident for her service to the community.

Carmela Varraso, a Braintree resident, was honored at the first annual Community Volunteer Recognition Night held on September 19, 2012 at Lombardo’s in Randolph, Mass.  Ms. Varraso was one of the 43 volunteers throughout Rotary District 7950 to be recognized by their local Rotary Club at the district-wide event.

Ms. Varraso was recognized for her long history of volunteer work in the Braintree community, mostly focused on the needs of the elderly.  She volunteers for the Friends of the Thayer Library and as a member of the Gardner’s Guild of Braintree.  Ms. Varraso was awarded the Edith B. Donkin award from South Shore Elder Services, Volunteer of the Year from the Braintree Elks and the Martin Luther King Jr. Peacemaker award from the Town of Braintree.

“I am humbled by the wonderful women and men who dedicate their time to improving the quality of life in their communities,” said Rotary International District 7950 Governor Joseph Clancy, who notes the district covers 2,500 Rotarians from Rhode Island, Southeastern Massachusetts, Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. “I consider it our duty as Rotarians to honor the many community volunteer awardees who all demonstrate the Rotary International motto, ‘Service above Self’ in their everyday lives.”
