Red Sox present 12th annual WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon set for August 27 and 28

BOSTON (August 8, 2013) – The Boston Red Sox, WEEI Sports Radio 93.7 FM, and NESN (New England Sports Network) are proud to announce that the 12th annual WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon will take place at Fenway Park on Tuesday, Aug. 27 and Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 6 a.m. to midnight.  The emotional two-day event has become one of the Jimmy Fund’s biggest annual fundraisers. In 2012, the Radio-Telethon raised more than $3.4 million, bringing the eleven-year total to more than $31 million.

This year’s 36-hour WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon will feature touching, compelling stories from Dana-Farber patients, doctors and nurses, as well as guest commentary from sports and entertainment celebrities, including Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, Red Sox President and CEO Larry Lucchino, and numerous Red Sox players, including 2013 Jimmy Fund co-captain Jarrod Saltalamacchia. A group of Red Sox players’ wives will also be volunteering at the event by answering phones to accept contributions on the evening of Aug. 28.

“These two days are always the most important of our year at WEEI,” said Jason Wolfe, Vice President of Programming and Operations at WEEI & WRKO. “Working with our friends and colleagues at NESN to produce an event that is so emotional and inspirational is something that we’re all so proud to be a part of. It’s amazing to think of the progress that Dana-Farber has made in cancer research and care since this event began in 2002 and I hope that everyone will take part again so we can raise as much money as possible for this incredible cause.”

“The great work being done by the researchers and care givers at Dana-Farber is an inspiration to us all,” said Sean McGrail, NESN’s President and CEO. “These incredible people are committed to fighting cancer and with the financial support of so many Red Sox fans during the Radio-Telethon, we hope to make a real difference in people’s lives.”

During both nights of the event, the Red Sox will hold special on-field ceremonies at Fenway Park before the team plays the Baltimore Orioles at 7:10 p.m. Before the Aug. 27 game, the 2013 Boston Red Sox Jimmy Fund Award will be presented to Dana-Farber Trustees Eileen and David B. Perini. On the evening of Aug. 28, family members of slain MIT Police Officer Sean Collier, who was a dedicated Jimmy Fund supporter, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Dana-Farber pediatric and adult patients will also attend both games.

“Over the past 11 years, the Red Sox – from owners, to players, to front office members and fans – have helped the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute raise millions and millions for cancer research, treatment, and patient care; it is part of our DNA,” said Red Sox President/CEO Larry Lucchino, who was treated for non-Hodgkins lymphoma at Dana-Farber in 1985 and 1986, long before he joined the club in 2002. “This 60-year partnership is one we are proud of, one we are committed to preserving, and one we hope to continue and expand in the years ahead. It is our small way to help improve the lives of people who have been affected by this miserable disease.”

The event is part of “Jimmy Fund Month” at Fenway Park throughout the month of August, as well as the year-long celebration of the Red Sox and the Jimmy Fund’s historic 60 year partnership - one of the most remarkable partnerships between a team and a charity in the history of professional sports.

“We are honored to join again with our friends at WEEI, NESN and the Red Sox during Jimmy Fund Month at Fenway Park to continue this beloved and important event,” said Suzanne Fountain, Director of the Jimmy Fund. “It is humbling to see the generosity pour in from around the country during the Radio-Telethon to support cancer care and research at Dana-Farber. It is so critical that we’re able to spread the word each summer with the help of these organizations and we are grateful for their support.”

“We are blessed to play a role in supporting Dr. Benz and his amazing team at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute as they stand up to cancer,” said Jeff Brown, Vice President & General Manager, Entercom Boston. “These two days are the most fulfilling and amazing days of the year for the entire Entercom family.  The people of New England prove their amazing generosity year after year in support of such a great cause.”
