As many know, Brookwood is much more than just a local organic farm growing good food for its members. Brookwood was created with the simple idea that all people should have access to fresh, organic food – especially those who can least afford it. Since its founding in 2006, Brookwood has worked hard to ensure that the food grown at Brookwood gets to areas where fresh food is hard to find and often too expensive for low-income residents. To do this, Brookwood partners with a number of food pantries, shelters and neighborhood organizations throughout the metro-Boston area to bring fresh food where it is needed most. In 2012, Brookwood donated over 12,000 lbs of fresh produce, valued at $34,000! Our weekly deliveries included the Germantown Neighborhood Pantry in Quincy; Rosie’s Place; Boston Natural Area Network’s Produce To Pantries, the Haitian America Public Health Initiative pantry in Mattapan; the Milton Food Pantry; the Canton Food Pantry; as well as a number of other local programs and events.
To meet its commitment to food justice, Brookwood has to raise $50,000 above and beyond the revenue it earns from food sales through our CSA program and farmers markets. Brookwood’s board of directors strives to raise these funds through the traditional fundraising strategies: small grants, donations, annual appeal, silent auction and fundraising events. This year’s Community Farm Dinner marks the first time we have hosted a large dinner event for its supporters, and Brookwood invites all to join them on September 29th to celebrate the harvest’s bounty with good friends and share its commitment to good food for all!
