School Committee Hosts State Officials at East Middle School

5 Things: A run-down of events and other useful information for your life in Braintree on Sept. 26, 2013.

1. The School Committee meets at 9:30 a.m. at East Middle School Thursday with officials from the Massachusetts School Building Authority.

Town officials are hoping the state will help pay for a multi-million dollar renovation project at East, similar to the one completed at South Middle School three years ago.

The project, approved by local officials earlier this year as the district's next priority, would upgrade heating and electrical systems, replace ceilings and perform other renovations at the 50-year-old East.

2. Braintree High School students will have Color Wars as part of Spirit Week. The Homecoming Rally is Friday afternoon, followed by the Homecoming Dance Saturday at 7 p.m. in the gymnasium.

Last month, the School Committee voted to ban outside students from Homecoming

3. Thayer Public Library hosts the Teen Afterschool Drawing Group from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Young Adult Room.

"Love to draw? Want to meet other teen artists and work on your skills? Come to the library afterschool and bring your sketchbook. We’ll have plenty of art supplies available to help you create a new art project, or just hang out, draw, and spend time with friends in a relaxed atmosphere.

"This is a drop-in program that runs for 4 weeks and participants may come to one or all of the meetings. We meet in the Young Adult Room on the library's lower level. No registration required. For teens 12-17 only please."

5. The first televised U.S. presidential debate took place today in 1960 between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Beyond policy differences, Kennedy's sharper physical image was said to have put him over the top in this debate.

From the New York Times the following day: "Mr. Nixon, wearing pancake makeup to cover his dark beard, smiled more frequently as he made his points and dabbed frequently at the perspiration that beaded out on his chin."
