2. Highlands Elementary School hosts its Holiday Bazaar Friday and its first winter shopping event this Saturday, Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

3. Another cold but clear one. The National Weather Service forecasts a high of 29 degrees with winds 11 to 17 miles per hour. Slight chance of snow early Saturday morning with a low around 15.

5. On this day in 2000, George W. Bush claimed the presidency, 36 days after election day, in a speech before the Texas House of Representatives. He spoke before a giant Christmas tree and a full house (see a C-SPAN video here).

The day before, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a statewide recount of ballots in Florida was unconstitutional. Democratic candidate Al Gore won more popular votes, but lost by five electoral college votes.
