Fun Friday Activities for Kids at Thayer Public Library

1. Thayer Public Library hosts "Anime & Manga Club age 9 - 18: Sumi-e Brush Painting" from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Logan Auditorium.

"During the summer the Thayer Public Library's popular Anime & Manga Clubs combine for two special events. For our August meeting kids and teens ages 9-18 (up to Grade 12) can watch anime, discuss favorite manga series, and learn about the art of Japanese Sumi-e brush painting. There will be a Sumi-e demonstration followed by the chance to make your own piece of beautiful Sumi-e artwork. Registration is not required, but this event is for ages 9-18 (up to Grade 12) only."

2. "Fun Friday age 3-6" is also at Thayer Library all day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Children's Room. "Drop in to the Children's Room 9:00 - 5:00 to make a craft, climb into the Bunny Burrow box, and play with blocks - all activities to stimulate creativity. For children age 3 - 6, no registration required. Part of the "Dig into Reading" Summer Reading Program for children."

3. The deadline is approaching for Community Preservation Act applications, which allow certain projects in Braintree to be funded, at least in part, by a portion of property taxes set aside for historic and other purposes.

5. On this day in 1945, approximately 39,000 people died when the United Stated dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. From an article in the New York Times: "The second use of the new and terrifying secret weapon which wiped out more than 60 percent of the city of Hiroshima and, according to the Japanese radio, killed nearly every resident of that town, occurred at noon today, Japanese time."
