Back to School for 10-12 Graders, Scrabble Play at Thayer Library

5 Things: A run-down of events and other useful information for your life in Braintree on Sept. 5, 2013.

1. Today is the first day of school for Braintree High School grades 10-12.

2. Play Scrabble at Thayer Public Library from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on the lower level.

"Join us every Thursday night for open Scrabble play. Come alone or bring a friend. All players are welcome!

"Play starts promptly at 6:30PM September through June."

4. There is a chance of showers around midday today, according to the National Weather Service. Otherwise clear. High around 68, low near 48.

5. Labor Day history: 

The holiday grew out of worker protests and remembrance days in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday under President Grover Cleveland in 1894, following a railroad strike that involved several deaths, 27 states and hundreds of thousands of union members. The legislation creating Labor Day was passed by Congress just six days after the strike ended.
