Police took a 65-year-old Braintree man into custody Wednesday after a brief stand-off in which SWAT was called to the Watson Park neighborhood.

The man was not charged with a crime, but rather taken to Quincy Medical Center for evaluation based on his doctor's order for a medical evaluation and the man's irrational behavior, Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

Officers went to the man's Arborway Drive home Wednesday afternoon to question him about an allegedd inappropriate encounter with a 9-year-old boy on Edgehill Road the day before because the boy reported the incident to his parents.

When they arrived, the man would only talk to officers through his window, and neighbors told police it sounded like he was moving furniture to barricade himself in, Jenkins said. They also said they thought he might have a gun.

"The man, whose name is not being released because he has not been charged with a crime, appeared to be irrational as he argued with officers, making threats towards the officers and refusing to come out of the house," Jenkins said.

At some point his doctor ordered a medical evaluation and The Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council SWAT team arrived to assist, staging at Watson Park.

The man eventually exited carrying a large pole and threatened officers, Jenkins said. He was taken into custody and brought to the hospital.
