This day in history: George Washington appointed head of Continental Army (1775), Arkansas inducted as 25th state (1836), Arlington National Cemetery established (1864), Lou Gehrig began with the New York Yankees (1923) and in 1995 OJ Simpson, during his murder trial, infamously tried and failed to put on the leather gloves allegedly used in the killing of his ex-wife and her boyfriend.

1. The Department of Elder Affairs is having a meeting at 2 p.m. today at 71 Cleveland Ave.

3. Children's Summer Reading Program Sign-Ups start at Thayer Public Library today in the Children's Room.

4. Today grades 9-11 have final exams at Braintree High School and it is the last scheduled day of the year for ninth graders.

5. Today is also the last day for Braintree Public Schools students in grades K-8. Have a great summer vacation!
