On this day in 1798, Congress passed the Sedition Act. The law, enacted and signed by President John Adams during hostilities with France, made it a federal crime to write against the government and officials. The legislation, along with the Alien Act, was immediately controversial and in 1832 was declared unconstitutional by the House Judiciary Committee.
