Five Things You Need to Know Today: Jan. 30, 2012

A run-down of events and other useful information for your life in Braintree today.

 

Born on this day in history; Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882), actor Gene Hackman (1930), actress Vanessa Redgrave (1937), Dick Cheney (1941), actor Christian Bale (1974) and hip hop artist Kid Cudi (1984).

1. The Braintree School Committee meets tonight at 7 p.m. at Braintree High School. The agenda includes: communication on full-day kindergarten (though more info will be available Feb. 9 for parents); welcoming new committee member Joe Zarrella; hearing from a Petersen Pool/ice rink representative; and an update on searches for a BHS headmaster and a special education director.

2. There is a Thayer Public Library Trustees Board Meeting from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Logan Auditorium tonight.

3. The Town of Braintree is advertising for a Town Auditor, who serves the Town Council in examining various departments' finances. "The individual or firm must be a certified public accountant and have extensive financial experience, preferably with municipalities." 4. Girls varsity BHS ice hockey takes on Austin Prep at 4:40 p.m. at Zapustas Arena in Randolph today. The varsity dance team has a dress rehearsal at 7:30 p.m. in the Braintree high gym tonight. Also, look for a story this morning on Braintree Patch on the dance team seniors heading to Florida for the nationals.

5. Also at Thayer Library today is Book Babies at 9:15 a.m. for infants, and toddlers through 24 months in the Logan Auditorium. About 20 minutes and no sign-up required.

Then, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., Thayer hosts Storytime for Ages 2-3 in the auditorium. "Stories, songs and a simple craft, with Elisabeth. To promote literacy, learning and fun for ages 2 and 3. Drop in (no sign-up)."
