Five Things You Need to Know Today: Feb. 7, 2012

A run-down of events and other useful information for your life in Braintree today.

 

Born on this day in history: Saint Thomas More (1478), Charles Dickens (1812), Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House series (1867), Nobel Prize-winning author Sinclair Lewis (1885), writer Gay Talese (1932), actor James Spader (1960), singer Garth Brooks (1962), comedian Chris Rock (1965), NBA All-Star Steve Nash (1974).

1. The Town Council meets at Town Hall this evening at 7:30 p.m. The agenda includes: an Eagle Scout recognition, review/acceptance of council  subcommittee appointments, and reports from the mayor and/or other departments on an outside auditor review and federal award programs. Also, several items are scheduled to be sent down to the Committee on Ways & Means, including extending tax abatements for certain military personnel and referral of the FY2012 capital spending plan to Ways & Means.

Prior to the meeting, the Committee on Ordinance & Rules will meet at 6:30 p.m. At 7 p.m., there will be a Time Capsule ceremony.

2. The Braintree Emergency Management Agency will perform equipment upkeep and training today from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Town Hall. For more information call 781-794-8188.

3. UPDATE: This meeting has been cancelled. The Housing Authority meets at 7:30 p.m. at 25 Roosevelt St.

4. The Planning Board meets in the upstairs Johnson Chambers at Town Hall tonight at 7 p.m. The agenda includes: a public hearing on Blue Hill Cemetery's plan for a crematory, February Zoning Board petitions and additional items.

5. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. this evening, Thayer Public Library hosts "Raising Financially Aware Children" More on this from the library calendar:
