Five Things You Need to Know Today: April 5

A run-down of events and other useful information for your life in Braintree today.

George Washington, on this day in 1792, utilized the veto for the first time in American history. He nixed a bill that would apportion Representatives among states. Washington's second veto, five years later, concerned a military bill. The first override vote in Congress defeating a veto came in 1845, when John Tyler was president. The bill, subject to the 32nd veto, banned payment on navy ships that Tyler had ordered.

1.  The meets tonight at at 7:30 p.m. Looks to be a short meeting, with a few public hearings on National Grid petitions (Elmlawn Rd., Lakeview Ave., Azel Rd. and Brow Ave.), along with fiscal year 2012 department budgets being sent to committee. Earlier, at 6:45 p.m., the DPW committee meets to discuss those National Grid items.

2. hosts Computer Series Class I today from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Lessons include webpage navigation, cutting and paste, searching terms, printing, savings – all the basics you need. On the lower level. Call 781-848-0405 ext. 4417.

3. The library also is home to a Children's Librarian Roundtable today. The event, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., involves children's librarians talking about relevant topics to their profession, including book recommendations. For librarians in CLAMS, SAILS and OCLN.

4. South Shore Hospital has an ongoing Prenatal Pool Exercise Class, Mon-Thurs, from 6:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. It is for "women in any stage of pregnancy.  You don't need to know how to swim as the exercises are done in waist or chest-deep water." Contact 781-624-4367 for registration.

5. Finally, another happening at Thayer Library. The Special Education Parent Advisory Council and Advocates for Autism in Massachusetts are discussing a new piece of legislation and health care access from 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. in the Logan Auditorium.
