FBI Agent Missing in California a 1994 Braintree High Graduate

Stephen Ivens left his home in Burbank, California on foot last week, was reported missing and police and FBI continue to search for him on Monday.

More than 100 public safety personnel are searching for a possibly suicidal FBI agent in the mountains of Burbank, Califorinia who graduated from 18 years ago, selected by fellow students as "shyest" in his class.

Los Angeles-based Special Agent Stephen Ivens left his Burbank home on foot last Thursday, reportedly despondent and suicidal, and police and FBI agents have been searching for him in the Verdugo Mountains, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Ivens attended Braintree High and graduated in 1994, according to the school's registrar and the yearbook. He is listed in the yearbook as belonging to the 1993 football team and is pictured with another student in the superlative section under the title "Shyest." In that photo, Ivens' head tilts downward as he looks up at the camera through a large pair of glasses.

The Associated Press reports that Ivens, 35, "was distraught and authorities fear he may have harmed himself," though the report notes that officials would not provide any further details.

A search of Ivens' home did not turn up his handgun, according to the AP, but there is no indication of foul play and he does not appear to be a threat to others.

The AP continued:

"Ivens was described by FBI colleagues as well liked. He is a devoted agent with no history of disciplinary action on the job, according to FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.

"Married with a one-year-old child, he has been working for the FBI for the past three years in the national security area. Prior to that, he worked as a Los Angeles police officer for eight years."
