Drunken Driving Charged After Braintree Driver Allegedly Crashes Pole and Leaves

The following information was supplied by the Braintree Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

A 42-year-old Braintree man was arrested early Monday morning after allegedly leaving the scene of an accident where he had crashed into a utility pole.

Hui H Xie was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol, failure to keep within marked lanes, leaving the scene of an accident and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle when police located him near Union Street and Union Drive, Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said in a statement.

Xie was caught after a motorist behind him told police that "he first observed Xie stopped in the off ramp leading to the Union Street rotary from the highway and then watched as he pulled into traffic, veered off the road and onto a traffic island and strike a street sign and light pole," Jenkins said.

Statements by Xie and other observations led police to conclude that he likely was intoxicated. At the police station, he recorded a blood alcohol level almost three times the legal limit, Jenkins said.
