Dean Disciplines Ducks as Archbishop Cruises
Junior standout Alexandra Dean guided the Archbishop Williams High School girls' basketball team to a 58-48 win over Fontbonne Academy in Sunday afternoon's match-up at Curry College.
With the smooth shot of Alexandra Dean, the Archbishop Williams High School girls’ basketball team polished off another victory.
The junior point guard led the way, recording a game high 21 points as the Bishops prevailed in a 58-48 victory over Catholic Conference League arch-rivals Fontbonne Academy at Curry College.
The Bishops, who improved to 7-2 will now face-off against Cardinal Spellman on Tuesday night before battling Arlington Catholic of Friday. The Ducks, who at one point were off to an 0-3 start, now fall to 5-5 overall.
Dean, who also knocked down three three-point field goals, was part of a stellar shooting performance by the Bishops, who cashed in on seven shots from beyond the arc.
“I was very pleased with the way we shot from the perimeter,’’ Bishops’ coach Jim Bancroft said. “The past few games, the shots haven’t been falling, and we were finally able to hit our outside shots. I was happy with the way we played defensively, especially in the third quarter, but we still have a lot of work to do, and the schedule’s only going to get tougher.”
Other contributors for the Bishops included Mariana Barry with 11 points while Sara Ryan added eight. Michaela Flanagan also chipped in with six points. Manning the post was Kayla Papizan, who engineered six points, while hauling down seven rebounds.
“[Dean] has been working so hard on her shot, and she was able to really come through with a huge game for us,’’ Bancroft said. “We also had some other girls really come through, step it up and make some key shots down the stretch.”
A Katie Alsip three pointer handed the Ducks a 5-2 lead before the Bishops executed a 10-0 run midway through the first quarter. After a free throw by Dean, Papizan nailed a jumper before Dean delivered a jumper and a three-pointer as the Bishops grabbed a 12-5 lead with 2:36 left.
“We have to do a better job playing with more consistency,’’ Ducks’ coach Clare Murphy said." At times we’ve been playing very well, but there have been other times we just haven’t been able to play with the same level of intensity. We need to find ways to play consistently all four quarters because we have a tough road ahead of us.”
A pair of free throws by Jen Gemma, who led the Ducks with 19 points, trimmed the lead to 12-7 before Ryan launched a three pointer from the top of the key, extending the edge to 15-7.
“[Archbishop Williams] just kept hitting the three point shot,’’ Murphy said. “It seemed like they hit about [20] and the shots just kept coming down. We have to do a better job of defending the three point shot as well as our perimeter defense.”
Ahead 16-10 through the end of the first quarter, the Bishops continued their hot hand from the perimeter. A jumper and a three-pointer from Barry from the right arc before a jumper by Dean increased the lead to 23-12. Barry maintained her strong presence from the perimeter, nailing a pair of baseline jumpers as the Bishops held a 27-16 advantage.
On a late surge, the Ducks engineered a 6-3 run as a pair baskets by Georgia Bourikas and a runner by Gemma trimmed the lead to 30-22 at the half.
Kicking off the third quarter, the Bishops delivered a key 9-2 run in the opening minutes. Ryan connected on a three pointer from the top of the key before Barry’s runner increased the lead to 35-24. Flanagan followed, knocking down a three pointer and a Papazian free throw by Papazian paved the way for a 39-24 edge.
Flanagan continued to light the lamp from the perimeter, nailing down her second three pointer before a jumper by Ryan increased three lead to 45-28.
“We came out and played a great third quarter,’’ Bancroft said. “We did exactly what we wanted to do. We were able to force turnovers and mental mistakes and we were able to take advantage of our opportunities. Defensively, we did a great job and we played our style of basketball.”
After a put back by Olivia Conrad extended the lead to 47-28, the Ducks engineered a 13-4 fourth quarter run. Lay-ups by Nicole Derba and Gemma trimmed the gap to 47-32 before runners from Derba, Alsip and Gemma brought the Ducks within 51-38.
Gemma’s efforts continued to place the Ducks within striking distance, completing a three point play with 2:46 remaining to cut the lead to 51-41. A lay-up by Bourikas closed the gap to 54-46, but key free throws by Dean in the final seconds secured the win.
“We stepped it up and played a great fourth quarter, but we were just in too much a hole to climb out of,’’ Murphy said. “I challenged the girls to play their best and they did just that, but they need to do that consistently for a full four quarters.”
