Braintree Among Most Irish Towns in State

Braintree has the 10th highest Irish population by percentage in the whole state.

Braintree and the South Shore may have just celebrated St. Patrick’s Day a little bit louder than the rest of the state.

That’s because Braintree and its neighboring communities are some of the most Irish towns in Massachusetts, according to the 2011 census, which asked respondents about their ancestry.

Braintree is in the 11th most Irish town in the Bay State with 35.9 percent of its population having Irish roots, according to WCVB.com's.

Many other South Shore towns also topped the list of the 100 most Irish towns in the state

White Island Shores, part of Plymouth, was listed as the “Most Irish Town” with a 49 percent Irish population.

Also topping the list was Green Harbor-Cedar Crest  and Ocean Bluff-Brant Rock, two areas of Marshfield which ranked 2nd and 3rd.

In an older list based on the 2010 census, Braintree was ranked the second most Irish town in the state with a 46.5 percent Irish population. Scituate, Weymouth, Hull, Marshfield and Avon also ranked high on that year's list on Boston.com.
